Storm Damage

Can hail damage be invisible from the ground?

Short Answer

Yes. A ground-level visual inspection cannot reliably identify every form of roof or exterior damage.

Detailed Explanation

Many forms of hail damage — bruised shingles, hairline cracks, granule loss in specific areas, damaged sealant strips — are not visible from the ground. Even missing or damaged shingles can be difficult to spot from ground level, particularly on multi-story homes or roofs with complex geometry. A proper hail damage inspection requires getting on the roof (or at minimum, using a ladder at the eave) to examine shingles up close, feel for soft spots, and assess granule loss. Drone inspections can help with visual assessment but may not detect all forms of damage. This is why insurance companies typically require a physical inspection before approving a hail damage claim.

Why It Matters

Assuming your roof is fine because it looks OK from the ground after a hailstorm can lead to undetected damage that worsens over time and may complicate future insurance claims.
