Roof Ventilation

Can powered attic fans replace soffit and ridge ventilation?

Short Answer

Not automatically. The ventilation system must be evaluated as a whole. Mixing ventilation systems without understanding airflow can create unintended conditions.

Detailed Explanation

Powered attic fans can move a lot of air, but they can also create problems if not properly integrated with the rest of the ventilation system. A powered fan without adequate intake will pull air from wherever it can — including from the living space through gaps in the ceiling, which wastes energy and can introduce moisture. A powered fan can also interfere with natural ridge vent airflow, creating competing ventilation systems that don't work well together. If a powered fan is being considered, the entire ventilation system — intake, exhaust, and air sealing — needs to be evaluated to ensure the fan enhances rather than disrupts attic ventilation.

Why It Matters

Adding a powered fan without evaluating the entire ventilation system can increase energy costs and create moisture problems rather than solving them.
